Captain

The Captain: Emil Lind Ankerstjerne

Emil graduated as a navigator from Marstal Navigation School in 2015 and has been the skipper of HALMØ since 2018. In addition to standing at the helm, he is also responsible – together with the rest of the crew – for maintaining and preparing HALMØ for the sailing season each year. For Emil, preserving historic wooden ships is about more than craftsmanship. It’s a way of keeping Denmark’s proud maritime traditions alive. A vital part of Danish history that guests get to experience firsthand the moment they step aboard.

Emil’s seafaring career began in 2011 as a trainee aboard “Skoleskibet DANMARK”. It was there he fell in love with the culture and way of working, and he’s been part of the maritime world ever since. After sailing on traditional ships in both Denmark and the UK, he returned to “Skoleskibet”, where he spent three years as quartermaster and boatswain, helping to train and teach young aspiring seafarers.

“It’s important to me that guests take an active part in the experience and leave with something truly unique.

Seeing the city from the sea is amazing, and after a day of hoisting sails, good company, and delicious food and drink, there’s something incredibly rewarding about watching the sun set over Copenhagen from the waters of the Øresund.”

Denmark's History at Sea

Emil’s experience is evident when he passionately talks about the importance of preserving these historic vessels. To him, it’s not just about elbow grease, varnish, and paint. These old wooden ships are not merely historical artifacts. They are living, sailing pieces of Danish history. Emil sees it as a meaningful mission to carry on the proud traditions and maritime heritage they represent. It brings him great joy to offer guests an experience where history isn’t just told – it’s felt and lived from the moment they step on board.
